LIVEHey friends around the world! Today's problems:

My bathroom outlet stopped working but the breaker isn't tripped. Why?

·

Hair dryer won't turn on in the bathroom. I checked the breaker panel, nothing is tripped. Is the outlet dead?

Concerns & risks

You plug in your hair dryer and nothing happens. The bathroom outlet is dead, but in the breaker panel every switch looks fine. Now you're stuck drying your hair in the kitchen.

No power for the hair dryer, and you might think you need an electrician.

Causes & evidence

A GFCI safety outlet somewhere on the same circuit tripped and cut power downstream. How GFCIs work: GFCI outlets.

What to do

  1. Look at this outlet: if it has TEST/RESET buttons, press RESET firmly.
  2. No buttons? Check other bathrooms, the kitchen, garage and outdoor outlets for a GFCI and press RESET.
  3. Plug in a lamp to test.
  4. If it trips again immediately, unplug everything on it and try once more.

Common mistakes: People often forget that one GFCI can protect several outlets, sometimes in another room, garage or outside. Check them all for a tripped button. Don't keep resetting a GFCI that trips instantly; something is faulty. Never open outlets with power on. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, call a licensed electrician.

Speed Man tip: Won't reset, or keeps tripping with nothing plugged in? Stop and call a licensed electrician.

Wrap-up: Dead bathroom outlet + no tripped breaker = tripped GFCI. Look for a TEST/RESET outlet in other rooms and press RESET. Keeps tripping? Electrician time.

⚡ Speed Summary

  1. Dead bathroom outlet + no tripped breaker = tripped GFCI.
  2. Look for a TEST/RESET outlet in other rooms and press RESET.
  3. Keeps tripping? Electrician time.
