LIVEHey friends around the world! Today's problems:

How do I fix a squeaky door hinge?

·

Our bedroom door squeaks so loud everyone wakes up. Do I need WD-40?

Concerns & risks

Every time you open the bedroom door at night, it squeaks loud enough to wake the whole house.

Squeaks wake the baby, the partner and the dog.

Causes & evidence

Metal-on-metal friction in the hinge pin. Dirty or dry pins squeak.

What to do

  1. Close the door. Tap the hinge pin up with a nail and hammer from below.
  2. Wipe the pin clean.
  3. Apply white lithium grease or a silicone lubricant (petroleum jelly works in a pinch).
  4. Tap the pin back, swing the door 10 times, wipe off excess.

Common mistakes: Don't drown the hinge in cooking oil, which can attract dust and get sticky. Wipe off excess lubricant. If the door sags, a loose screw may be the real problem. Tighten hinges before lubing. Lift the hinge pin out one hinge at a time while the door is closed so the door doesn't drop on you. Tap it up from below with a nail and hammer. Wipe the pin clean, apply a light coat of lubricant or even a little bar soap, slide it back and swing the door a few times to spread it.

Speed Man tip: Penetrating sprays work briefly but can attract dust. Grease lasts longer.

Wrap-up: Squeaks come from a dry hinge pin. Pull the pin, clean it, grease it. Grease lasts longer than spray.

⚡ Speed Summary

  2. Pull the pin, clean it, grease it.
  3. Grease lasts longer than spray.
