LIVEHey friends around the world! Today's problems:

How much liquid can I bring on a plane?

·

Can I bring my shampoo in my carry-on?

Concerns & risks

You were trying to pack light with just a carry-on, but at security your full-size shampoo got pulled out of your bag and tossed in the bin.

Getting stopped at security is a pain.

Causes & evidence

TSA's 3-1-1 rule: containers 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, in one quart-size bag. See TSA liquids rule.

What to do

  1. Use travel-size bottles.
  2. Put them in one quart-size bag.
  3. Pack larger items in checked bags.

Common mistakes: Common mistakes: judging by how much is left in the bottle. TSA looks at the container size, so a big bottle that's almost empty can still be taken. Use travel containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, and fit them all in one quart-size bag. Gels, creams, pastes and sprays count too: toothpaste, lotion, peanut butter and dry shampoo spray. Pack the bag on top so you can pull it out quickly if asked. Check whether your airport uses newer scanners where you may not need to remove the bag, but follow the officer's instructions. Larger liquids go in checked bags; seal them in a zip bag in case they leak. Buying toiletries at your destination is often easier. Look up any item on TSA's 'What Can I Bring?' tool or the MyTSA app before you pack.

Speed Man tip: Check TSA's 'What Can I Bring?' tool.

Wrap-up: 3.4 oz. One quart bag. Big ones checked.

⚡ Speed Summary

  1. 3.4 oz.
  2. One quart bag.
